ELIA SABATO
Elia Sabato's artistic research has developed, since the beginning, on the relationship between matter and visual perception, using mirrored steel as a privileged means to metaphorically explore the complexity of human relationships and the ineffability of emotions. Through the technique of abrasion on steel, the artist creates works that, depending on the angle of refraction of the light and the position of the viewer, now reveal and now hide the images, thus generating a dynamic and changing dialogue. This process reflects the very nature of our experiences, where often what we see and understand is influenced by our personal perspective and our position in the world.
Elia Sabato's artistic research is part of a broad philosophical context, recalling the theories of contemporary thinkers such as Gilles Deleuze, who explored the idea of "becoming" as a continuous process of transformation and differentiation. His works can be seen as a visual illustration of this philosophy, as they never present a static meaning, but rather offer themselves as spaces of interpretative possibility. Every angle can reveal a new reading and a new experience, inviting the viewer to question what is really "real".
From an anthropological point of view, his work aligns with the reflections of theorists such as Victor Turner, who speaks of the concept of "liminality" and identity transformations. His sculptures are liminal spaces, in which images emerge and dissolve, symbolizing the complexity of contemporary human identity, which is never fixed but always in motion. The mirrored surface of the steel not only reflects the image of the viewer, but also represents a metaphor for the connection and interdependence between individuals: when we do not limit ourselves to looking only for our own reflection, we begin to connect with others, embracing the diversity of our shared humanity.
The themes addressed in his works are universal ones such as: love, fear, hate, uncertainty and hope, with a particular attention to the emotions that characterize our contemporary experience. The minimal and intrinsic approach to his sculptures invites the viewer to a deep reflection, reminiscent of Walter Benjamin's aesthetic reflections on the "aura" of the original artwork. In an age where digital tends to saturate our perceptions, his work aims to return to an 'analogue' dimension, creating physical works that speak of the present through matter and at the same time invite us to explore questions of authenticity and presence.
In creating his new studio that also functions as an exhibition space, Sabato wanted to create a place of encounter and dialogue, where the sense of community is built through sharing and creativity. In this space, the works are not only labeled as art to be observed, but become an integral part of a broader discussion on our shared experiences, offering the opportunity to explore the tensions and bonds that unite us as human beings.
His research continues to evolve, and each new work represents a step forward in the attempt to navigate through the complexities of our existence, using the strength of metal not only as a material, but as a symbol of resilience and transformation. Sabato concludes by inviting each viewer to live a profound emotional and intellectual experience, to embrace the encounter between form and meaning, between reflection and reality, and to go beyond the visible to discover the stories hidden between the folds of life.
